Fifty Years of Tailgate Tales: The Good, he Fun and the Ugly

In the annals of Collegefootballfan.com’s history of attending games dating back to 1966, the 1981 Rutgers vs. Virginia game set our standard among our lowest scoring college games attended.  Late in the game, Rutgers scored the only three total points scored by either team.  Below we list the lowest scoring games we’ve attended among all 634 games seen thus far.  In our book, Tales from the Tailgate: From the fan who’s seen ’em all that can be purchased below through our link to Amazon.com,  you can read about the Rutgers-Virginia contest and 118 other games we attended to reach our goal to see every FBS team play at least once!

Keeping up

Since then among the lowest scoring college games attended, three other FBS games that have totaled ten points or less. At other levels of NCAA football, we attended four contests also resulting in ten points or fewer.  For our highest scoring games attended, check out several games tallying over 100 points on our Milestones page!  In 2022, we are up to date having seen all 130 FBS programs now in existence. We plan to see the three new FBS additions as they qualify to play at that level in the next couple of years.

Can you name them?  If not, see what programs are stepping up by clicking here on our History page.

Rutgers shut out Virginia at The Meadowlands in a low scoring affair that evening, and the same happened to me after the game. Read about it in "Tales from the Tailgate."

Coincidence? The second lowest scoring game I ever attended was by the losing team of the first college game ever played. The lowest was by the winner. Final score in 1869: RU 6 PU 4. I'd see that same result when Iowa beat PSU years later. Unbelievable!

Coincidence? The second lowest scoring game we ever attended (6-0) involved Princeton, the losing team of the first college game ever played. The lowest scoring game was by the winner of that game, Rutgers. Final score in 1869: RU 6 PU 4. We’d seen that same final score when Iowa defeated PSU 135 years later. Unbelievable! Of course, the rules differed back then.
