About the Book
Fifty Years of Tailgate Tales regale in Steve’s good, unique, and fun experiences. Stories entertain and intertwine his life-long adventure. These include march-on at ArmyNavy; attending the Rose Bowl comped by Kermit the Frog; an unlikely team shutting out the Old Ball Coach; pounced upon at a “Miracle” upset; an honorary nickname earned at Wake Forest; and befriending an icon who attended 788 San Diego State games. He also addresses concerns about changes that tend to make college football less competitive rather than more competitive to win national championships. Transfer portal policies, NIL money intended not to recruit players, outdated strength of schedule metrics, schedule manipulating, and conference realignments lie among them. Loyalty, teamwork, and commitment are still intangibles to be learned outside the classroom despite focus on finances to support college athletics. Granted, players deserve some share of that revenue, but can this be done and still avoid “pay for play?” Beyond college, the vast majority of players pursue careers outside professional sports. The intangibles taught by college football are lessons well-learned for life.
