Lowest scoring games

FBS:

1981   Rutgers   3      Virginia  0       The Meadowlands, on a late FG before a missed FG.

1987   Rutgers   7      Duke      0        One of only two times HC Steve Spurrier was ever shut out.

2004   Iowa       6      Penn State  4   Same score as the first college football game ever played, Rutgers and Princeton (1869).

2009  South Carolina  7  NC State  3 Season opener for both at NC State; Spurrier coached the winner this time

Rutgers shut out Virginia at The Meadowlands in a low scoring affair that evening, and the same happened to me after the game. Read about it in "Tales from the Tailgate."

Other divisions:

1998  Princeton  6      Cornell  0         First game ever played at Princeton University Stadium

2013  College of NJ  7  Kean U. 0       NJAC, D3: TCNJ scored on its first drive and finished with a goal line stand.

2008  Harvard    10     Yale       0       “The Game” – seen played at Harvard for our first time there.

1982  Widener    10     Juniata  0        The Alma Mater fell; only game seen by us at D-3 Widener.

Coincidence? The second lowest scoring game I ever attended was by the losing team of the first college game ever played. The lowest was by the winner. Final score in 1869: RU 6 PU 4. I'd see that same result when Iowa beat PSU years later. Unbelievable!
